This is a very short newsletter, and was originally part of a larger one largely dedicated to ADSL2+. That has been held up for a few days, so this article has been extracted, and is being published separately.

1. New Number range to be opened

Telecom will introduce a broadband voice (bbv) service later this year. This will use a new number range 0700800000 to 0700839999. At this stage the service has not been named and the introduction date has not yet been set.

This communication is to give advance notice to PBX suppliers that PBXs will need to be programmed to accept the longer number length and to apply correct routing.

If bbv calls are to be allowed, then the following comfigurations need to be implemented on the PBX:

  • Allow 10 digit bbv numbers (most NZ numbers are currently 9 digits)
  • Route bbv calls to nearest PSTN access point, that is separate bbv calls from 07 least cost routing. As bbv is a non-geographical service, there will only be a single PSTN to bbv tariff, so least cost routing is not required, so needs to be separated from any 07 (Hamilton region ) least cost routing already performed by the PBX.
