TELECOM ACCESS STANDARDS NEWSLETTER NO. 167

December 2008

RETURN TO ACCESS STANDARDS HOMEPAGE

Another year has passed and regrettably I have only found time to publish one newsletter before now. It has been an interesting year with some fundemental changes to Telecom as a result of operational separation. We are now running a "permit" system on behalf of Chorus covering the connection of equipment to unbundled copper cable pairs. The Commerce Commission in conjuction with the Telecommunications Carrier's Forum have produced an Interference Management Plan which specifies the CPE requirements for a number of deployment classes including ADSL, VDSL2 SHDSL and eSHDSL. We have published a process based on this document through which applicants can have equipment tested against the requirements of the IMP and be issued with a "ChorusPermit" if test results are compliant. The link to this process can be found on our website at http://www.telepermit.co.nz/Chorus_permit_process.html.

I had hoped to publish a new PTC specification for VDSL2 Splitters during the past week or so, but there are a couple of points which are still being resolved, so it will now be early in the new year.

Another development which is close to fruition is a standalone Disconnect Test Point (DTP). This will be able to be retrofitted to legacy type house wiring (PTC103) using the same footprint as a standard BT jackpoint. It will serve as a convenient place for the connection of either a VDSL2 splitter or a residential gateway, as well as being useful as a point where network and locval wiring can be isolated in order to simplify fault location.

That's it for 2008, Access Standards will be closed for business until 12th January 2009.

It remains for Alan, Bill and me to wish all our readers a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
